Could someone please describe how to set points on big twin Evinrude 2 cylinder, built in 1957. Thanks. |

Remove the fly wheel, with a proper puller. There are two screws on the points. one to loosen and one to adjust the opening. Loosen the one screw 1/2 turn. put motor in gear and use the prop to turn the motor so the high spot on the cam holds the points open. Adjust the opening to .020" with a feeler gage, wire type prefered. tighten holding screw. Do the same on the other points.
If ht eflywheel has a window in it it may be possible to do the adjusting with out removing the wheel. You will need a little flash light to see.
If the motor has been in storage or used several seasons it would be a goood idea to remove the points and either replace or polish te tungsten points with 400 grit wet/dry silicon carbide paper. then re assemble and set to .020" Points available from NAPA auto stores. |
