Someone just gave me a tired Yanmar 2QM15. It's the same model as in my sailboat, so it will be valuable(!) The guy had taken the head off (while installed in the boat) thinking he'd get 'round to fixing a starting problem. Then he let it sit for years. (As in, inches-of-mussels-on-the-hull-bottom years.) Between (presumably) some some spilled cooling seawater, condensation, and perhaps some leakage via the companionway hatch, the block and head mating faces show significant rust. Also, the pistons appear frozen in the cylinders. The oil came out shiny black, and there's no evidence of rust inside the crankcase. The engine looks to have been painted all over with non-Yanmar flat gray, and that is generally in far better shape than my own engine's original paint. (Maybe it has been rebuilt? The oil pan had been sealed with what looks like red Permatex.) I'm wondering how to proceed in evaluating the possibilities regarding the head and block. I will want to get the pistons out -- maybe still inside the cylinders -- as I'm hoping the rods and crank will help fix my own engine's nasty (non-timing-related) knock. Any suggestions will be appreciated! |
