hey guys i have a 85 ski supreme with a 454 indmar in it im having a problem with the altanator it started and ran fine but i changed the origanal alt. and now when i try to turn it over in blows a fuse. and when i unhook the alt. it will crank. do i have to use a marine alt. ? |

If you want to avoid blowing up, use a MARINE alternator. It is housed in an ignition proof case. An automotive alternator is not. Any fuel spill in your engine compartment and your auto alternator will ignite the fumes and blow up your boat. It also sounds like you upped the amp output which is why you are blowing the fuse. Most marine charging circuits are protected by a fuse or breaker rated to protect the downstream wiring. If you up the amps with a new MARINE alternator, you have to up the gauge of the wire and fuse. |
