I just inherited a 3.5 hp outboard motor. Bad news is it's previous owner painted the cover and I can't read what button and knob does what. This thing runs, but I'm not sure if it's air cooled, and or if it's an oil/gas mix or what. I can figure out most of this by trial & error but I'd like to know if I can come up with an owner's manual for this motor. It's model number is K350 4000A--sn is 70476. Would like to know the year of this thing and whom it was made for Sears/Wards??? Can anyone help?

Bob, you should have started a new discussion - you almost got lost here.

Anyhow, you have a Clinton 3.5 horse Air-Cooled model built somewhere between 1976-80.

You can mix 2 cycle engine oil (for lawnmowers/chainsaws - NOT Marine oil) at a ratio of 24:1 with regular unleaded gas and it will run fine for you.

Clinton went bankrupt a couple of times over the years and finally completely called it quits in 1980 - so the records are a little scarce and I can't narrow down your model any closer than above.

Because it has a Clinton model number (as opposed to a Sears or Wards) it may simply have been marketed as a Clinton engine.

You can most likely find a manual at www.discount-marine-parts.com just email them with your model number and I'm sure they can hook you up...

Robert, I believe your type is actually KTV (probably obscured a bit).

Your motor is a 1975, single cylinder, 3 horse, built by Clinton for Montgomery Wards (store brand).

The fuel mixes at 24:1 - regular unleaded gas and 2 cycle engine oil such as used for lawnmowers and chainsaws - NOT marine oil.

You can use an NGK BM4A spark plug gapped at .030" (or a Champion cross ref to that NGK).

Robert, yes it's air cooled. The exhaust housing/lower unit were common to a number of outboard mfg's - so water cooled so it was built to accomodate both...

Your type is actually KTV 50575 B - they must have printed the "K" poorly, because many list it that way.

Your Clinton was built by them for Mongomery Wards and sold under the store brand "Sea King".

It is a 1978 (clinton model K751), single cylinder, 7.5 horse.

The few clinton's that I have seen are air-cooled engines and I have no information that they ever produced a water-cooled model (but can't say for sure).

If your motor is air cooled you can mix it with regular unleaded gas and 2 cycle oil (such as used for lawnmowers/chainsaws) - not marine oil at a ratio of 24:1.

Both Clinton and Montgomery Wards are out of business so certain parts may be hard to find. There is a number of sources on the internet that can provide you with tune-up/ignition parts or alternately, a local small engine shop may be able to help you out since the carbs, point etc were of a fairly generic variety...

It runs, but not well. In the carb. bowel was the seat for the carb. needle. I have 24:1 chainsaw oil in the gas. I have ordered from Dave Henshaw a manuel but have not received it as yet. Do you know what year it was built and can I seat the needle sleeve with the needle valve?

I am a woodworker and not a mechanic. Any help would be much appreciated. I also have more numbers from the carb but don't know if they mean anything. Thank you for any help you can give me.

The J9's are 5 horse motors built in the early 60's. These are air-cooled so you use normal 2 cycle engine oil such as used with lawnmowers and chainsaws (NOT marine TCW-3 oil).

You can mix with regular unleaded gas (86/87 octane) at 24:1..

Also, Graham after going thru a cleaning process with this Sea King 7.5 HP and checking to see I have spark on the plug and it seems like its primed I am beginning to get a really good pull back on the cord after I make a complete pull thru. I am not to familiar with outboards so is this normal? is it about to fire off?? I dont have this secured very well so I want to ask questions first. Thanks

Frank, you only need three things for the motor to fire - compression/gas-oil-air mix/and a spark.

If you are feeling a bit of resistance and you have spark I would suspect that there was insuffient gas in the cylinder or it would have fired for you. However, a weak spark could prevent it from firing as well. Did you throw in a new plug?

Graham, I located the air intake on the carburator behind some bracket and using a small squirt can put just a little gas in the carb and it tried starting so I believe this is a good engine that some how lost its prop and shaft,?? perhaps broke, bent ?? but I think it is now worth pursuing the parts. I called the Twin Cities Outboard and I need to send in my lower unit so they can match up what I have, so that seems to be where I am at unless I can find the same model and hp who has other problems and buy the whole outboard I guess the cost is something around 80.00 + shipping

Frank, you could easily find another 7.5 clinton on Ebay for that price. Perhaps that would be the way to go and use what you have as spare parts.

They are fairly simple little engines and you could keep one going for quite a while with the parts from the other...

Your piece may be difficult to find and expensive when you do find it. An easier/cheaper solution is to find an OMC/BRP dealer (evinrude/johnson) and get an OMC gas connector for the engine end. They are inexpensive and standard for all OMC models - ditto the fuel lines (or change your fuel line connection to OMC as well).

Even my Merc's have OMC fittings at the engine now and they work great....

Graham, the 7.5 Sea King I have been working on is now running great, wow what a find, I do have another question you have said these are air cooled with the fins on the motor and surrounding area, my question: is the exhaust water cooled or air cooled as well, on the rear side of the leg just at the top of prop there is a vent opening that looks like it could be an intake. Thanks

Frank, could be one of two ways. Most of the small "generic" outboards used a common "leg" (exhaust housing). An OMC will have the same leg and it's a water cooled motor. So the "common leg" was designed for multiple applications. Some models had a water cooled exhaust as you mention - others were strictly air cooled.

I believe alot of the 7.5's had a water cooled exhaust, but off the top of my head just can't say for sure

Graham I have determined that the Gale 3 hp has no spark and after removing the top from the ignition area and doing a little clean up there I am wondering if the capacitor is the problem since it may be the original one, I cleaned up the point with a point file, lightly and repaired some of the wires but most all of it is very old and tender. how do I determine what capacitor should replace this one, I understand a capacitor just stores energy and its that other stuff in there that generates it so what other tests can I run to narrow this down to what the problem is ??
I am lot short on terms here so forgive me.
Thanks Frank

I don't know of any way to test the condenser - it's one of those things that you replace when everything else checks out good.

I do imagine it shouldn't be too difficult to come by a new one. You could try www.discount-marine-parts.com

The mix rate is 24:1 (regular unleaded) and normal 2 cycle engine such as used for lawnmowers and chainsaws, not marine 2 cycle TCW-3 oil which is designed for water cooled engines.

I can't tell you how many ounces to the gallon. In Canada and the U.K. our gallon is larger than in the US (plus we now mostly deal with litres/milliliters).

In any event just about every bottle of oil for 2 stroke motors has a chart on the back label and will give you the oz/gallons or ml/litres as the case applies for a number of different ratio's...

My brother in law recently picked up a Sea King 7 hp motor. The motor cover also says Montgomery Ward on it. We are looking for the proper gas/oil mixture for it. Motor info as follows:

Model # K700 3107B
Type # 6027370R
Serial # 925600

Any help would be appreciated also would like to know the year of it.

Scott, you have a Clinton outboard built for Wards and sold under their store brand "sea king".

You can mix it at 50:1 but use normal 2 cycle motor oil (such as used with lawnmowers/chainsaws) not "marine TCW-3" oil. This is an air-cooled engine and needs the regular oil.

From what you have posted I can't give you a year. The K700's were built over a number of model years.

On the tag should be another number "KTV" followed by some digits (sometimes looks like XTV) - that will give the exact year...

Tim, the 3.5 Clinton built models originally had an "internal" fuel tank, so it was simply connected to the carb by a piece of hose with a shut-off valve spliced in.

Are you wanting to hook this up to use a remote tank?

Graham--I have the same motor as Tim Zimmerman--a 1969 3.5 H.P. Wards Sea King manufactured by Clinton--It uses an external fuel tank with a unique connector at the engine. I need the same hose connector. Is there a common connector, such as OMC or Mercury that would work? By the way, I located a recoil assembly at http://www.anglersfishinginfo.com/classified/motors.html buy did not find a fuel hose connector--any suggestions?

Sorry, wasn't looking back far enough with my Clinton manuals - both of you have "J" model Clintons (J350 more precisely).

I have found original Clinton part numbers for the fittings -

69-331-500 was the male end and
69-332-500 the female end (the end on your motor in the picture).

Don't have a clue where you would find one though. Personally might be inclined to change both ends - looks like maybe the Merc round style connectors may "cosmetically" fit.

If you aren't worried about looks, for less than 20 bucks you can get OMC fittings - engine mounted and hose end (which I use on my Mercs) simply because all "OMC's" are the same so only need to carry 1 spare gas line that will fit whatever I have hangin' off the back...

For the Clinton built 3.5 HP Wards Sea king a fuel connection to engine kit (not the original) is available from Discount Marine Parts for around $20. Look them up on the Web at http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/index.html and give them a call at 906-466-2180.
They were very helpful.
Hope this helps everyone...

Mike, Wards is out of business and Chrysler who built this 1966 model motor has been out of business as well for over 20 years.

Some parts are still available, depending on what you are looking for and what it may need.

Personally, I wouldn't spend very much on it. Even in perfect running condition it is worth somewhat under 100 bucks in the used market....

I recently acquired a Montgomery Wards 7.5hp outboard. The Metal tag in front of the engine says it is a Clinton Model: K7515107B, Serial: 1521561, Type: XTV50507B. So far I have been reasonably successful in getting this little engine to run. However, the plastic Cover/Fuel tank is broken badly. Can anyone help me locate a Owners / Parts manual or a replacement cover.

OK here is the label of what I just got (Wards 5HP):

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e396/arbarnhart/5HPmotor.jpg

Can you tell year or anything in particular I should know?

Is this the hard to find fitting?

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e396/arbarnhart/5HPmotor1.jpg

Someone is going to give me a line fitting he thinks may work, but if it doesn't Iwill take the advice above and convert it.

Mine was stored dry (properly; it was shipped and then shelved) and I need to add the lower unit oil. I ordered a manual, but I want to go ahead and get this done if I can. The vent plug is obvious - in the exhaust/water outlet. Is the fill plug one of the screws for the prop gear housing?

This one is in pretty amazing shape. It looks like it was pretty much rebuilt or at least refurbished when it was shipped and then just set aside for whatever reason. Everything turns freely. I was still taking a chance buying it dry, but the guy's story rings true (shipped to him, kept it as a spare for a while, doesn't want to mess with setting it up so selling cheap - $60). Of course I already spent another $40 or so getting a tank and line, and $9 on a manual, and...

But I really need the lower unit info (my manual will come, but if someone can clue me in sooner, I would appreciate it.

I had a little Tanaka (sp?) with an internal tank that cracked. I don't know if it is the same stuff, but it is one of the few things I have used the two part "plastic weld" (NOT epoxy) on that it worked perfectly on. I meant it really lived up to it's name - it was like the plastic melted at the cracked and formed back together. It never leaked again.

Mac, Clinton made a decent motor.

However, they are long out of business. Parts can be difficult to find, and expensive if you do find them.

A 9 horse Clinton is worth no more than 100-150 bucks in the used market, it probably only cost about 300-500 brand new depending on the year.

You can't compare it to an OMC or a Merc of the same period. A 9 horse Clinton probably came from the late 70's - a similar "Brand" name would sell for 500 or more, would still be somewhat supported by the mfg to some degree, would have a solid ignition system and be a water cooled motor.

Additionally, this is a single cylinder engine. So unless tuned perfectly it will shake like a wet dog outside on a cold day - a major mfg would have built this in a 2 cylinder model.

The 9 horse was a combination air cooled/water cooled motor. The engine itself was basically a lawnmower engine and was air cooled. The exhaust was water cooled - helped keep the noise to a minimum among other things.

If it's running well it still is a decent motor, but not for 300 bucks - it's worth half that if it's in decent shape...

Ken, not really the expert - just have alot of info laying around :-)

If you wipe away some more of the guck you will find the model to be VWB 27903B, which makes it a 1968, single cylinder, 3.5 horse Chrysler built for Montgomery Wards department stores.

I can't even find a part number for a prop, or anyplace that sells them. I was never too fond of Chryslers and have limited information as a result.

Laings Outboards sells most maintenace parts for this and as a shot in the dark you could try getting ahold of the guys at www.discount-marine-parts.com - they used to be a Chrysler dealer way back and still have tons of factory parts - might be able to help you with the prop (or at least a part number and a nudge in the right direction).

As to value - not much, 25-50 bucks if it's running....

Frank, that is a 1957 Gale (OMC), dressed as a Sea King for Montgomery Wards department stores.

If you clean up the tag a little better I think you should find that the model is actually GG8960A, making it a twin cylinder, 5 horse identical to Gale's own model 5D14 "buccaneer".

Should mix at 24:1 and if you are looking for a manual you could try www.discount-marine-parts.com and for parts you can try www.laingsoutboards.com

Thanks to the Outboard Motor Club and this question thread I have determined that I have a 1954 Clinton Model 25 that my Grandpaw left me. Now the fun begins. I figure I will begin by trying to find a service manual and have inquired to Discount Marine Parts. Any chance anybody out there may have access to one laying around? BTW, not sure the significance, but the other numbers on the motor are 8 2 3 1 1 I and 0005272. I'll try to attach a picture here so you can get a look. I have a Clinton Apache outboard I recently purchased that is missing the fuel line to the remote tank. I'm not sure what the year or model # is since I'm at work. Someone tried to tell me I need an expensive pressurized tank that has dual lines. There is only space for one line at the connector on the engine. It basically looks like a Mercury connection, just smaller and shallower. There are 2 lines coming off the connection going to the engine so I'm stumped if I can convert this to another style or not.

David, the Apache's were Clintons J5/J6/J9 series and all those models had fuel pumps and a single line.

"Someone" was a little confused between Clinton and OMC. OMC did have models, late 50's for sure that had a dual hose, one to pressurize the gas tank with a line then up ultimately to the carb....

What I would do is go with a more readily available connection. All my motors, especially my Mercs have been converted to modern OMC connections (the cheapest on the market) - they are universal so regardless of what I have hanging on the back of the boat, I can use a single fuel line without fumbling around for the Merc/Yamaha type, Merc bayonette type etc etc....

How would one go about doing that? The fuel pump is on the tiller handle. The only way I can figure is to run a small hose off the existing port and connect an OMC fitting. Would this be correct or is there a better way?

The pump or the "connection" - you can move the connection back to the cowl unless you are bent on keeping it "original".

If you just want functional, you can fashion a small bracket, or cut a hole in the cowl etc etc..

Kathy, that is a 1979, single cylinder 7.5 horse built by Clinton and sold by Montgomery Wards under their SeaKing line.

This particular model was sold by Wards in 1978/79/80.

The Clinton model (as noted in the type) is a K751.

I have an original owners/parts manual for that model in PDF format. If you would like it, just click on my name (to the left) and drop me an email - I get lot's of mail so if you put K751 in the subject I will remember what you are looking for :-)

Both Clinton and Wards are long out of business, but should it ever require parts www.laingsoutboards.com is a good source for most items you might need.

Kevin, she was made by Clinton (now long out of business).

Clinton sold engines under their own name, plus built many for Montgomery Wards which were sold as Sea Kings through the 1970's.

It's a 1972, single cylinder, 5 horse.

The K500's came in two different versions - a purely air-cooled and a blended (air cooled powerhead, water cooled exhaust).

I don't have detailed enough Clinton lists to be able to tell you exactly what you have based on your model numbers. (but suspect that the 1106A part indicates that this is a "blended" model, so there will be an impeller in the lower unit).

In any case, neither model had an air-cleaner and both run on the same mix -

40:1 (the manual actually calls for 3oz oil/per gallon of gas = 42.66:1 - 40:1 is close enough) using regular unleaded and 2 stroke engine oil (such as used for lawnmowers/chainsaws - NOT Marine TCW3 oil which is designed to burn in cooler running engines)...

Thank you Graham,
looks like my engine is with water cooled exhaust.
Want to show pictures to make sure it don't need air filter, cleaner or any cap on carburetter.

Nice looking little motor. And yes, even though it would seem that there should be an air filter or baffle or something there, that's the way it was designed - the carb just hangin' there like that.

The little Merc's (6/8/9.9/15 horse models) had the carb just hangin' like that well up until the mid/late 1990's.

The oldest of my three models with no carb cover of any kind is a 1986 that I have had since new. It has over 2000 hours of run time on it and the lack of a filter or cover has not caused it any issues...

I picked up a Clinton 7hp K700 series motor dirt cheap at an auction. Any idea how to drain and fill the lower unit? Or do I need to remove the prop and the four screws that hold on the bottom portion. The normal drain/fill screws are not on this one. I ran it for a minute to make sure it works and it does great! Now want to service it to keep it that way. Thanks for your time.

thanks, found one I could bend to fit.....now a real problem...I have had the powerhead off to fix the waterleaks and have used the motor since reassembling it. Now all of a sudden when you shift it into gear the prop does not turn. It feels like it it is engaging at the handle but the prop doesn't turn and the waterpump does not start pumping....what did I break now.....tks

Looking for a fuel line to fuel pump fitting for my 1970 7hp J700 Clinton / SeaKing or a way of retro-fitting.

I just came into possesion of a Clinton made Sea-King 9 hp engine. The guy said it runs but he didn't run it for long because it didn't show signs of water circulating. He said he thought it might need a water pump. I pulled the hood off and it looks like an air cooled motor to me. Could that be? I have no idea of the year or any numbers as of yet - didn't think of writing them down.

I finally wrote down the numbers for my 9 hp motor. Can someone figure out what I have and if there is a water pump in it? - It looks like the motor is air cooled but I had someone tell me it is water cooled.

It has a water pump. But all it does is keep the bottom seal and bearing from frying in the exhaust.-Helps keep the paint on the intermediate housing also. This was as far as the "air-cools" went engineering wise. Yours should have a real forward and reverse gear box/ solid state ignition and the "tin can" fuel pump. Almost all the parts interchange with the 7.5 of that design. Try the engine in a trash can full of water and see if you get a little spray (not much) from the exhaust relief ports going down the back of the motor.

Well, I kept messing with it and got it running. The guy that had it before me had the shear pin in the wrong hole and it wouldn't engage the drive slot in the prop. I moved it to the outer hole and it works fine. I can't tell if the water is circulating or not. I might need to fill the trash can a little more - the exhaust was blowing water everywhere. I'll try again tomorrow. I would still like someone to e-mail me a manual if they have it. This is a 9 hp. (it looks like a Cleveland Browns inspired motor)

OK, I tried it in a little more water. I put my hand near the hole and I got a tiny bit of water on my hand. After looking through the manual that William sent me,(thank you so much) I see that it should be checked while in gear, if I'm reading it right. If we ever get any decent weather in N.E. Ohio I'll try it on the water.
