I just picked up a 1957 m/w 12hp that had been sitting around for about 5 yrs and I don't know alot about engines. Im just looking for some advise on what to do first as far as cleaning it up and getting it running. If anyone has any experience with these engines the help would be greatly appreciated.

Check compression. Check the spark. Remove and clean the carburetor as sitting for that length of time, it'll be fouled.

thanks joe, with a few new spark plugs and some cleaning I was able to get the engine running but not very well. it runs better at higher rpm's. at idle it makes kind of a banging sound and wants to stall, then recovers for a few seconds and then does it again. I used a fuel mixture of 25 to 1 and was wondering if that was to much. any advise?
