I have a 1977 wellcraft suncruiser 255 with a 351 windsor with mercruise out drive. I am having a power problem, boat will not run above 19 mph. When I am wide open the rpm's go to 3300-3400. should they be higher?
also what is the proper propellor for this set up. Distributor cap and wires are new as are plugs, What is recommended plug gapping. Any other helpful info as to what I should check will be greatly appreciated |

Mercruiser section is where Frank was sending you, Eric.
Not here.
However, you should be running 4000-4400 @ WOT
Most of the time, when one cannot attain full rpm, it is fuel related -fuel filter first step
Then you might want to look at timing advance weights and springs in the distributor. They may be all rusty.
The proper propeller is the one that makes the boat run 4000-4400 rpm AFTER the engine is known to be producing full rated power.
Changing props now not a good idea.
If it ever ran right with that prop, it should again... |

Thanks, The distributor is new as are wires I am thinking it's the timing. Going to try that first. |
