I just picked up an old Arena Craft and am trying to figure out which y-block it has, a 292 or 312, the serial # on the front timing cover is 5647. Any help would be great, thanks.

If that is the entire SN??? It should be a 55
& could be either a 272 or 292. I admit this
reply is merely based on what i've read right
here in this forum - so is in no way intended
to look like i know the answer. Let me add
that usually there are a few prefix digits in
the SN.

Thanks for the reply, since posting the question I have removed the engine from the boat and identified the block casting # which is ECG, making it a '55-'57 272ci dearborn casting. I am curious however, it has the large valve heads, ECZ-G, and I did not think that the 272 came with these, guessing they had been changed sometime in it's life.

Jeff, Your engine very well may have come with
those heads. John Mummerts' Ford-Y-Block.com
has this page:
http://www.ford-y-block.com/cylinderheadchart.htm

That lends an idea of as to what was produced for
cars.
