Help! I need all specialized gaskets for a complete engine rebuild of the above. Doing a full restoration on a 64 Dunphy X55. I need the exhaust manifold gaskets, the timing cover seal, oil pan gasket and all of the small gaskets that would go along with a marine engine rebuild. Currently, the engine is completely rebuilt to long block status. I have everything that an automotive gasket set would have by Felpro but none of the marine. Thanks for the help. Bill}} |

Cathryn, Assuming you are doing a Y-block rebuild, I don't know where to find a Interceptor gasket set. In general the Y-block automotive gasket set covers most of the the gaskets. The oil pan shape is quite different between the two applications. You can use Permatex Ultra Black RTV Silicon gasket maker, or any other good gasket maker, to form it. You may also have to make your own water outlet gaskets for the horizontal carburator system, I'm not sure about this since I use automotive intakes. The automotive timing cover, exhaust, & fuel pump gaskets work fine. Hope this was helpful. Ray |

When I rebuilt my 312, everything I needed was in the automotive gasket set. Including the oil pan. Although the pan itself is different, it still matches up to the block. No reason for the gasket to be different. The water necks and the timing cover all fit the block and heads the same as a car. Intake manifold too. I use the dual sidedrafts. I just bought a new intake manifold gasket after having the carbs rebuilt and it went right on with the water necks. No Problem. |

It turns out the bottom of the timing chain cover and the oil pan shapes are different between the Marine & Automotive applications. Therefore a different oil pan gasket is required. I have enclosed a picture of the automotive units on the left and the Marine on the right. |

I don't see why an automotive gasket couldn't be "shortened" to fit. I always use gasket sealant anyway. Good pic! Glad you posted that!! |

I dont remember having to modify my gasket but its been several years since the rebuild. I guess maybe I did and just forgot. I do know I didnt buy any special gaskets. Thanks for the picture. |

RE: "shortened" to fit The bolt holes don't align when you cut the automotive gasket shorter. |

That fact just leaped out from your picture when I read your reply Ray. So, in viewing that pic more closely: is that a separate strip of gasket material used for the timing cover to pan (as in auto gasket cut off & strip added to front)? |

Brock, RE: Separate strip of gasket You are correct it is a separate piece. Apparently custom made. |

cathryn brown, I also have a 1964 Dunphy X-55. I've done lots of research over probably 20 years and have located about 35 of these boats. Are you the owner? Haven't seen your info. (the name cathryn brown) yet in all my searching. Was wondering if this is a "new" X-55 find for me here. my e-mail is craigx55@atlanticbb.net Appreciate any contact and pics or info about your boat. I've got probably hundreds of pics and lots of info. on the model and a forthcoming article in a major marine publication (can't divulge that yet). Contact me if you get time! |
