When starting a cold engine the cooling system has lost its prime and becomes airlocked. Clamping and releasing the hose that goes from the top of the head to the thermo stats, sometimes fixes the problem when the engine is getting hot. The water pump was just replaced and we back feed the whole cooling system with water and were not able to locate any blockages. Engine pictures at url below.
Anyone have any ideas at what to replace or test?

I'll bet there's an air leak on the suction side of the raw water pump. Look at the strainer gaskets and hose connections.
