I am a newbe and I had my universal 20 overheat and peg the temp gauge. The sea cock intake valve was closed. My guess is the impeller is toast. How do I change the impeller and what other problem may I have caused. The engine would start and run for short periods as the temp would rise. It is a 1989 engine with 692 hours.

Remove the cover from the raw water pump and remove the impeller. The cover may have the pump data inscribed on it. Go to West Marine with the old impeller and the data of the cover. they should have them or can order them. If not try Lewis Marine.
When you put it back together use the liub that comes with the impeller if none came with it use liquid dish soap. Do not use grease or oil.

If the engine did not run long when it overheated you not have any other problems. These engines are very durable. If there is any other damage you will find out soon.

If the water lock mufler is a plastic Vetus or simular it may have melted so check it and the exhaust hose for damage.
