I just purchased a 1984 43' Morgan sailboat with a Perkins 4108 engine. The books that came with the boat, say the original engine was a Yanmar. I'm wondering if the Perkins I have is truly a newer engine than 1984. My serial number ends in a letter "U" which I guess is the letter than signifies the production year. What year is my engine? Thanks! (:

Steve sent in some additional info with an engine number of:

ED70058/U/647803/U

From the info I have that would be:
  • ED = 4.108
  • 70058 = Parts List Number
  • U = country of origin code of United Kingdom
  • 647803 = Production Serial number
  • U = This last letter should "indicate the calander year of manufacture..." but it doesn't match up with what I show B=1975, C=1976, D=1977, E=1978, etc

Mabye someone else with some Perkins knowledge can help out here...

Regards,
Andrew Menkart

My "Perkins workshop manual" on page 5 shows a chart with the years, but G-M. It does agree with your dates however, but states: "The letters I,O, and Q will not be used."

Therefore on this page it shows "G=1980, H=1981, I=not used, J= 1982, K=1983, L=1984, M=1985...."

Then extrapolating forward on my part: N=1986, O=not used, P=1987, Q=not used, R=1988, S=1989, T=1990, U=1991

So just confirming that with my number ending in a "U", the engine should be a 1991, correct????

I recently bought a 41' Formosa with a Perkins 4108. The boat was built in 1977 and I think the engine is original. I am wondering how many hp the 4108s can be? Are they all the same, or do they vary?
