I have a Yanmar ysb12, single cyl, it goes into gear well, but is reluctant with a clunk to go back into neutral, from either forwad or reverse, I try to keep the RPMs as low as possible when shifting

Check the cable and shift lever. The throw should be the same either way. Make sure it is doing that. You can disconnect the cable at the gear and also check for wear of the shift lever. This is a wet clutch and has a asbestos lined disk one for forward and one for reverse that runs in the gear oil bath. There is adjustment but rare you have to to that, it may been some worn parts in that gear? There is a service book and parts book available. May be a good idea to get one. Keep in mind that the service book is one for engine and one for the gear.

This 3GM30F is locked in gear, nothing turns: propshaft, transmission, nor engine. How do you get it out of gear? I see that the morse controls have been dismantled.
