I am in the process of looking for a boat. Most that I have seen run DD's. Because my plans call for me to live on the boat and travel with it for some years (I hope) I would like a bigger boat. I have so far been looking at 40' - 50' and 2 60 footers. Most are ex fishing type boats.
It seems that most had 671's and the 2 bigger ones had 12v71's.
I don't plan to sit in a marina and take the occasional trip so I don't want some 12v71 that is going to eat 20GPH. I am not a speed demon so a cruising speed of 7 to 8 knots is good for me.
I know almost nothing about DD's so my question to you all is:
Is it possible to have that type of a boat (40'-60') that will get under 10GPH (5 even better)at crusing speeds?
Will say a 6-71 be able to get that low of a GPH?
How small of a motor could I get away with on a boat say 50ft and still cruise at 7-8 knots?
If it is possible to get low GPH I would be willing to incur the cost of swaping motors/trans. Who knows maybe I could find a good boat with a bad motor 
I realize there are a lot of variables (weight, boat type etc) so I am not asking for an exact boat/engine combo.
I just want to know if it is the realm of possibilities and if it is maybe what to look for.
How big can I go in boat size and how small can I go in motor size?

I can't speak to the gph question. I burn about 30 at 22knts. I can say that DDs are very reliable, almost bulletproof engines. They will run under conditions where others would not. They can also be a drippy mess if you don't chase after small oil leaks.
Keep up with the maintenance and they will last the life of the boat. |
