Engine cranks OK, but loud popping sound coming from engine as it cranks and black soot coming out of exhaust.

Bled fuel system but it didn't help.

Removed valve covers and rocker arm assembly this morning and discovered bent push rods on both the intake and exhaust valves of the rear cylinder. Now what caused that?

It turned out to be a stuck intake valve. I freed the valve by tapping cautiously with a hard-plastic mallet and spraying brake cleaner onto the valve stem.
