Hi,
I have a 3 cylinder volvo that has been in the shop for this problem before. It was over $2000.00 worth of work that has NOT solved the problem!
I had this engine running today. It ran fine for about 3 hours. I shut it down and re-started it minutes later, it ran badly, maybe on only 2 cylinders. I've had the head re-done, injectors and much more! Whats up??? Please help!!!
Waynard.

There are some possibilities, but mainly caused by air or vaporing diesel .
Start by disconnecting the fuel return line and let it run into a cannister. Monitor the flow and check for air bubbles, Yhe best is to attach a clear plastic hose and make a loop, that way the bubles will be on top of the loop.
Check that the fuel return line from engine is not restricted in any way. If fuel does not flow free, diesel may evaporate in the return line when You shut down the engine.
It might be an internal leak in the injection pump creating air leak, but more likely somewhere in the suction line from tank to engine. Use the same cannister as You use for the return, and hook a rubber hose straight onto the engine to eliminate boat system and run same test.
