Does anyone know what the various Volvo designations mean, such as an AQAD 40, TAMD 40, KAMD, etc?? I am looking at a few used engines for my boat, and the sellers do not know what year the engines are. What might I be able to figure out from the model name?

T= Turbo

Thanks a bunch for the info. Any idea how long the AQAT's and TAMD's have been in production? Where is a good place to find parts and specs? I don't seem to be finding much. Is a Kompressor similar to a supercharger? Thanks again

The AqAD/TAMD 40 came around 1980, at that time I was working at Volvo Penta Sea Test station in Gothenburg. They were later 'replaced' by 41, 42, 43, 44 series with and without compressor.The 40 series were indirect (pre-chamber) injection with glow-plug pre-heating, from 41 and up direct injected.
Compressors handle extra 'boost' up to the turbo takes over at about 24-2600rpm. Turbos boost pressure up to 1 bar, superchargers above 1 bar.
Specs for the different engines are all over the net, go Google! Depending of where You live the net and Google might be a good help.
Finally the 'M' stands for marine, to separate them from the industrial ones (generators, snow-weasels, caterpillars etc). 'Bobtail's are engines without gearbox/drive.
