we are just about to upgrade from our trailer boat with outboard to a 28 foot launch with diesel volvo penta, and 270T stern leg. What do we need to know? what do we look for when purchasing? And advice greatfully accepted. (and yes, we know to get a mechanic to check it out, but want some knowledge ourselves, not just for the purchase but for the long term) |

You must use diesel rated crankcase oil and not oil that is rated for gasoline engines only. Fuel is more critical with a diesel engine. Keep your filter elements changed and monitor the water in the water seperating area of filter. Use a biocide additive in your fuel tank with each top off. Know how to bleed air from fuel system. |

WOW, sounds totally technical - thanks very much for the advice. Do you own this type of engine? |

No, that's just minimal stuff you should understand about diesels. An easy to read book about marine diesels is "Marine Diesel Engines" by Nigel Calder. Helped me a lot. As with working on cars, there is a lot of myths out there about diesel engines believed by shade tree mechanics and even some professional mechanics. Listen to buddies but verify with established experts. |
