I have been having some problem with my new to me KAD43...replaced frozen alternator and tach by a Volvo Tech...their found that there's a break somewhere...he was able to jump the alternator somehow and got it to charge, and also the tach working...mechanic mention it's best to install a new line...shop owner want to trace the break and fix it...all Greek to me, but when the owner want $110/hr and think it will take 8-10 hours to diagnose and fix, I took the boat home...Does anyone know what the problem could be? |

Alternator is energized thru light on alarm panel by light brown wire that attaches to D+/61 terminal on back of alternator. It also has a resistor under black box cover that allows low speed alternator energizing. This only applies to Volvo alternator. If aftermarket installed, all bets are off. |

Thanks Dick...would you happen to know how I can test if the light on alarm panel is sending signal to D+ terminal. |

Man, this alternator thing is getting very upsetting...my local Volvo tech can't fix it nor can my dependable mobile marine tech. I had the alternator regulator replaced because it does not work at low RPM...new regulator seems to take care of the problem when I have it at home on the hose...rpm reading 600...but when I am in the water...rpm reads about 550 and the damn thing cut-out again and I get the battery alarm going off...when I rev it pass 600RPM she starts charging... Maybe, just maybe I need to increase my idle to 600RPM? Does anyone know what is the recommend idle RPM for a KAD43 and how do I adjust it? |

If you are starting from tuna tower or flybridge, the resister that I spoke about before must be in use or you will get what you describe happening. It is under black plastic box. Can't miss it. check it out. |

Thank you for responding again Dick...I really appreciated it. I did find the resistor in the black box. It is a 33 ohm resistor that is wrapped in heatshrink tubing. it is splice on to the brown wire and goes to the relay for the compressor. It ohm out correct so it is still good. After reading your notes again...you said "under" the black box, while the resistor I found is "in"...Am I missing your point? the black box... |
