I have a Volvo Penta MD30A 65HP Diesel engine with an MS2B transmission on my sailboat. The transmission works fine with maybe a little shudder when shifting at low rpm. The problem is I have water in the transmission oil, probably from the cooler. What is involved with fixing this? |

Drain gear oil. unhook shaft flange and push back. Remove 6 bolts holding rear gear housing on.Remove gear housing with gear attached. Under gear is cooler tube. If it has to be replaced, gear has to be pressed out of bearings and reinstalled with a new tension sleeve to get correct preload on bearings.Should have a manual to do correctly. |

Thanks for the prompt response. Is the manual you refer to for the transmission? Any idea where to get the manual? The manuals I've found in online searches are mainly for the engine and not very detailed. |

Thanks for the input. I looked up the part and it is only about $86. When I drained the transmission there was no water. Some unknown crewmember must have overfilled it without my knowledge. I refilled it to the proper level and everything seems fine. I'm glad I didn't have to replace the cooler. |

I had a customer that had same thing happening. Would come and go getting water in unit. It finally got to point of replacing trans that are not produced any more. It was the cooler. The tips that stick out into housing for pipes corroded away and orings could not seat anymore. If you have the time I would check it out further. |

I have got several hours on it now (after changing the oil with the proper quantity) and no recurrance of increasing oil level so far. If it happens again I'll take it apart and check the cooler. Thanks |
