The Volvo Penta Model 2003 is a saildrive engine. In the past, it has had a problem of dying once when starting cold. Sometimes it would start well at full throttle then wind down and die 5 or 10 seconds later. The second try it would start fine. When running, even right away, it sounded and felt good. I had decided this was a small amount of air getting in the fuel line. (Calder's book.) I just had the local dealer service the lower unit, replace the saildrive seal, and install closed cooling. Immediately after, I have a new problem. It is diffcult to start, requiring 10 seconds of cranking or more. When it starts (at full throttle) it does not go to full RPM. It hunts in RPM, moving up and down between about 1500 maximum and down to nearly dying. The hunting cycles are perhaps 10 to 20 seconds long. This goes on for as for 5 or 10 minutes, gradually getting better. While this is happening, it ejects a very large amount of black soot that floats on the water. But the soot dissipates without leaving an oil slick. Eventually it gets better and then runs normally at full RPM and very clean. If shut down and re-started it starts normally and runs fine. Does anyone know what this could be? |

My TAMD72 did the same thing recently. It turned out to be a bad run relay on the EDC. Simple fix and inexpensive part. Good luck! |

I have jus had a similar problem with my 2002 series saildrive after replacing both primary and secondary diesel filters and diesel pump. It turned out to be a small amount of air getting into the diesel on the suction side of the diesel pump. It's hard to track down exactly where because it draws in air rather than leaking out diesel. I seem to have fixed it by stripping filters, cleaning and greasing seals and checking all joints in the suction side of the diesel line. Runs like a charm now. |

Thank you all! The problem was resolved with a new fuel filter. It may well have been an air leak, since the other symptom has gone away. Previously, the engine would start well but die withing seconds, then start and run on a second try. I have seen this attributed to a small air leak as well. |
