I have a pair of 2001 tamd74 and have had the boat hauled out for 3 months. After putting the boat back in the water, the port side engine will only rev to 1,300 rpm under load. In netrual it rev's up. Under load when trying to rev beyond 1,300 rpms, lots of black smoke. It suppose to rev to 2,600 rpms & did before the 3 month haul-out. The turbo on the problematic engine looks much more aged (rusted/discolored) than the turbo on the good engine - could it have over heated? Perhaps incidentally, the exhaust riser on this engine did form a leak and poured out exhaust a few months prior to the 3 month haul out. I replaced the exhaust riser and everything worked great after this replacement before the haul-out. I've also noted a very small oil leak on the turbo closest to the air filter since the low rpm issue started. I tightened the bolts on that part of the turbo and the leak stopped. There was also a very small oil leak in the hose running from the oil filter to the turbo - i replaced the hose. Also, while the boat was out, I found that the fuel feed line to the problematic engine was clogged. I looked pretty badly clogged - I have no idea how it was running. Could there have been an adjustment to compensate for this fuel line clog prior to me having the boat and now that I removed the clog causes the engine to flood with fuel (black smoke)? Potentially a completly seperate issue, I've had a recurring issue prior to the haul out with an EDC diagnositic alert of 2.7 - loss of connectivity between flybridge control and engine. Also, batteries are suspect - slightly less than 12v on gauge and > 13v coming off generator on motor. Motor starts fine though. Goodness... an overload of potential cause/effect! I've changed all the filters. Clean bottom, good props. thanks for your help. |

Turbo locked up from water? Remove air filter and see if compressor side wheel will turn. NOT RUNNING! Have to be careful. Check all connections for code problem. Low voltage could be problem. |

Low RPM and black smoke. I've had the same problem on a TAMD41. I traced the problem to a blocked wire strainer inserted in the fuel tank riser, not visible or accessable. removing this strainer completely solved the problem. Strangely enough black smoke on a diesel indicate fuel starvation! |

Dickv you called it correctly. Thanks! The compressor side wheel was stuck. I freed the wheel with a wrench and this solved the rpm problem. Now I've got to decide whether to do something proactive with this turbo or let it be? There is a small oil leak on the inside of the compressor side of the turbo but I do not hear any bad bearings and the wheel turns pretty smoothly now. Also, engines were sold as new to the previous owner but I've found that this turbo is a remanufactured turbo and the other engine is the original volvo. They must of had problem with the original turbo in the first few hours of operation. With the discoloration, the oil leak, the wheel getting stuck and having been remanufactured... i'm leaning towards being proactive. Anyone with an opinion on that? On another note, I just replaced my fuel tank and found a clogged fuel line fitting. Before the problem with the turbo, this same engine did put out more black smoke than the other. I'm hoping fixing the fuel line will reduce the black smoke on that engine per Peter Freeman's post. Thanks. |
