Gentlemen, Ladies, I just opened the thermostat housing on two MP 454 E.F.I. installed in a Mainship and found NO thermostat inside !! The Heat Exchangers have a similar housing complete with temp. senders. Does the engines work without thermostats ? Thanks ! |

The engine will run without thermostats, but not correctly. It will not operate at the proper temp, this causes the ECM to compensate for the poor running condition. by retarding the ignition timing or reducing the fuel flow. My Marine Power manual shows three different cooling system configurations depending on if you are FW or RW cooled and if the heat exchanger is front mounted or rear mounted. If you have two similar housings and there is no thermostat in the first one, check the second one. If your engine never gets over about 140 degrees, it's a pretty safe bet that someone has removed it. If your run 160+, it has a thermostat installed, you just haven't found it yet. |
