I have a 1984 281 Catalina. I'm looking to replace the cutless bearings, what is the best way to do this, by removing the shaft and do it on the boat or removing the struts with the shaft still connected? How hard are the bearings to remove? |

Hi Richard, I've done it with a hammer, and with a hack saw. The hack saw method is easier on the strut IF (>>IF<<) you don't cut into the strut. It can be done if you're careful. Here's the hammer method. http://www.network54.com/Forum/424840/message/1152849283 Here's the hack saw method. http://www.network54.com/Forum/424840/message/1177296701 There is a threaded home-made rod "puller" method, and of course a commercial device too, and these work if you don't have a thin wall bearing. Those are tough to get ahold of, and it's pretty easy to cut through them if you don't mind about an hours worth of pain, suffering, and inventing a few new words in the frustration and exclamation category! Regards, good luck, Paul |

Here is how I installed mine. It may work for you too. Good luck. Paul http://www.network54.com/Forum/424840/message/1152934344 |
