"carefully?"

Seriously....Replacing most starters involves getting "close and personal" with your boat.
Depending on the layout, its either a breeze ( as on My ChrisCraft Lancer)... or on other boats a major pain, i.e., involves working blind and reaching under the engine.

Disconnect battery
Remove wires from starter connections (make notes!)
Starter typically in with two bolts ( or two nuts or one of each..sometimes a support bracket)...remove them
Starter should slide forward and out.

DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO REPLACE WITH AN AUTOMOTIVE ONE... USE A MARINE ONE!!!

They are "explosion proof". The common fallicy is that they are seal to prevent gas fumes from entering... Not so. The actual test by the certification labs assumes that gas fumes get into the starter (or alternator or distributor) and actually ignite. In order to pass this test there are two criteria...1) The device suffers no mechanical failure, especially one that would render the explosion proof nature of the device ineffective... and
2) That any combustion products that do exit the enclosure (when they fill it with gas fumes and intentionaly ignite it) are not hot enough to ignite any gas fumes that are around it outside.

There is one other difference... If/when you have an explosion on your boat, your insurance company will pay if all components are approved, but they won't pay if any aren't...

Oh... there's one other diffference... price :-)

Thanks Robert,

Thought there would have been a logical explanation.

And you described it beautifully.

Bruce.
