I've got a co-worker who has the above boat. The problem is, the boat won't plane out AT ALL. The prop on it is very small. The boat's been pulled out, but no information on the prop can be found. He's wanting a factory prop, I assume, but has no idea how to find any info. Chris Craft's records only go back 25 years, is what he was told. Does anyone have ANY information I can pass on to him? Thanks in advance! |

I have a 1982 Chris Craft 251 Catalina Express powered by a Chris Craft Marine Power 305K (225hp) engine. I don't know at the moment what the exact prop size is, but if you go to miwheel.com (Michigan Wheel Corp.) they have an analysis program that will return to you the exact "proper wheel for the boat. |

Sterling - Did you get the prop info? I have the same boat (1980) and the same problem. |

Yes and no. It seems as if my buddy's boat is "geared" with a pulling prop; something to have more pull for putting. There was supposedly two versions of the boat -- one for cruising, and then the sport version that has a different prop and a few other options. He actually found a place with prop info, but I'd have to get back to you on that. He found another prop, but it was advised not to put it on since the engine has been turning that one for so many years. He was told that if you switch it out, it may screw something up as far as the engine goes. This is all second-hand, so...maybe it helped, maybe it didn't. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see if I can put you onto something. I think he actually called the folks that Dave Alinsky posted above and got all the info. |

Re: "but it was advised not to put it on since the engine has been turning that one for so many years"... That is total "used bull food" ! Never too late to put a correct prop on an engine (unless the engine has been damaged by running with the incorrect porp. The damage won't be reversed). The correct prop is the one that lets the engine run within the max WOT RPMS range with normal load. |
