I just rebuilt my velvet drive 72C. When I turn the input shaft by hand, the output shaft turns as well. Is this normal, or is it bidning somewhere? Also when I installed it on my 440, in any gear it won't turn (I think it's the pump) but the output shaft will turn about 2-3 rpms with the engine running about 3000 rpm. Any help would be great!

Danny, I made a tool for bench testing Velvet Drives that I'll try to describe. You'll need an old drive plate.

I cut the female spline from the drive plate. I then welded it concentrically to an old 3/4", or so, size socket.

With the spline on the socket, I attach it to a socket-speed wrench. Then using speed wrench you spin pump over in correct direction, also you have someone else apply a load to the output shaft with a block of wood.

You should be able to shift between for/rev as normal and witness output change direction. Make sure that you have enough oil in gear.

,Noel.

Noel, thanks for the tip. I actually had the damn clutch plates in the wrong spots, so I fixed that, and hooked it to the engine, and aside from what I've been told is normal velvet drive chatter noise, it works fine!
