I used a starter from a 318 Jet on my LM 318 and the gears won't match or engage. Starter turns but misses the flywheel gear. Any help? Don

Are you sure the Bendix is extending? Try zapping the starter off the motor and see.

The starter worked fine on the Jet engine and I tried it off the engine and it is extending. I measured the flywheels and they are the same. I am wondering if the bell housing is different causing the mismatch of the gears. Don

Probably. Ticks me off why they can't make them fit most of the motors.

Maybe they are but you have to shim it. Even if the housing's are different I only know of 1 starter.

Dave from the ChryslerCrew.com checks in here once in awhile but you can ask him direct. He happens to own a jet.

Don - I have a 318 jet and your bell housing deduction is likely. Since jets are driven directly off of the flywheel, the bell housings are different than those designed to marry to a trans. The unit may be slightly different. If you have access to the jet, you may want to compare mount location/positions to confirm.

There is more to this story. I got my boat in pieces and the futher I go the more I find out. Someone has been swapping parts from several engines. I have been looking really hard today, and I believe the flywheel is the wrong size. I took the starter off my running engine and it won't engage. The flywheel seems to be to small. Does this help? Were there different sizes? Don

I believe I have solved the problem. There were two flywheels made. Mine is aprox. 12-1/2 inches and the other is called a 14 inch (actually about 13-1/2) . I have ordered one and will see if this correct the problem. Thanks for the input as always. Don

Don what trans are you running if your using a BW set up you should have a 160 tooth flywheel...

Also folks try installing a automotive flywheel in their boat and find out it is 18 teeth to small. If you need the correct one call me and I can hook you up with the proper one.

Thanks David, bought one (arrived today) from Marine Parts Source. Counted the teeth and you are right on. 160 teeth. Will install tomorrow and hope everything goes well. Thanks again, Don
