In New York, we have to pull out our boats for the winter, unfortunately. My '71 Century Coronado with it's M440 came out of the water last Sunday. It's only been 4 days, and I already miss the sound of that big motor and it's long pipes. I'll miss it all winter long. I already can't wait until spring. |

I'm right there with you Larry. I've never really been a fan of Dodge trucks. However, I've developed a soft spot for ones with aftermarket exhaust systems....becuase they remind me of the boat. |

I used to run my Dakota with straight pipes, had an interceptor v8 in it, sounded just like the boat as she climbed up on plane, music to the ears. |

Up here in the Great White North , a lot of the police forces use Dodges, if you know the right boxes to tick on the order form you can get an engine from a highway interceptor in your truck |

..."winter, unfortunately. My '71 Century Coronado with it's M440 came out of the water last Sunday. It's only been 4 days, and I already miss the sound of that big motor and it's long pipes." That's what video cameras are for! I've got lots of tape of my boat over the years to enjoy as the snow falls. Jeff PS: Just hauled mine out too. |

Here in FL, it has just cooled down enough to take my M440 powered Arabian out. I leave it out of the water in the summer, too hot for me. I love the roar it has! Can't wait to put the lights on it for the annual Christmas Boat Parade. BTW, an 'Interceptor' motor is a Ford, Chrysler called their 440 police motors 'Pursuit' and the 318 or slant six 225 police motors 'Cruiser'. |

I was going to get the the Ford saying, what you had, was an R/T package, cam and computer, sounds the same, 4* on the intake side, and 6* on the exhaust side. Because of the bigger cam, timing jumped up faster, TC lock up was delayed, and when the RE transmission came out, shift points were higher with the lighter throttle settings, making the R/T seem more powerful. All in all, the HP difference was ten HP for the 360, and less torque. Until the wannabe HEMI came out, a Magnum was basically a magnum. And don't scoff at a slant! Never have I seen a motor glow orange and the exhaust ports over and over and over, and still manage to start back up once cooled. That said, I want to run dual exhaust on my M360, the single sounds funny to me. |

I like the Slant Six! It just doesn't have the roar of the big RB motor. I have several cars and trucks with 225s. The one in my '84 D100 and it's strong enough to pull my boat. I also use it to pull my car trailer loaded with cars weighing as much as 4000lbs. Of course, I also like the 440 and have several cars with the 440 Six Pack and 440 Six Barrel motors. |

Back in 1970 My Dad lost his mind and bought two 440 Six-pack motors for our 1950 40’ Matthews. He started to install them in October and in May the next year he was still installing them. I'll never forget the day he fired them up the first time. They each came to life on the first try with a roar then a major rumble, lope that sounded like a pro-stock racecar. My Dad was Smiles from ear to ear and my mom just threw her arms up in the air and went below decks mumbling something about all that money for all that noise. We ran the first season with the triple setup but that winter they came off and he put on new single four-barrel manifolds and carbs. He did this because the boat was burning 30 gallons and hour each side and that was only at 3,000 rpm. We still have the boat although Dad has passed on. And my mom still calls the engines your father’s madness. They come to life the same way they did that first time with a roar, rumble and lope. For years there wasn’t another boat her size around that could out run her be it glass or wood. She was officially clocked at 26.7 Knots at 3,200 Rpm . For an 18 ton round bottom boat thats gettin the job done! She will turn the tach needles off her original tach dials because they only go to 4,500 rpm. I don’t think My dad ever ran her wide open and I don’t think I ever will either. She doesn’t get run hard anymore she’s to grand a lady at 59 years of age. Now she never sees anything over 2,000 Rpm. The sound of those motors through 5” exhaust pipe almost fifteen feet long still gives me goose bumps when she starts. I know how you feel Larry! My first large boat was a Whit Craft and it had twin Slant sixes .Those to engines were so loud you could here her coming for miles. Just my memories BluecometkB |

I know...I know...I was asking for it. They were indestructible and straight sixes weren't uncommon really but I wish everyone knew if they adjusted their valves like they were supposed to do they wouldn'tve sounded like lawn mowers... |
