hey everybody, new to the board but am impressed with the wealth of knowledge i've seen so far. anyways, i aquired a 1969 Century Resorter with the 318 225hp small block in it and have just found out that there are a couple of hairline cracks in the block. i am not very engine savvy, but im aware that this is a pretty devastating problem. i was told that the cracks could be braised for a temporary fix until funds can be raised for a new engine (i guess) any thoughts or helpful advice? |

Nick, I wouldn't throw good money into a cracked looser. Seems like a lot of "chance" trying to bandaid the problem. Find a good block to put your dollars into. You don't want to be doing another swap because of a repaired water jacket leak that opened up or a crack that was missed in the repair. Just the way I would go. Good Luck, DS |

Nick, 318 are a dime a dozen. you can find a good 318 block in any junk yard for $80-$100. or you could go with a crate engine. i have to ask, is your boat a 16ft cheetah. I have a 1969 16ft century cheetah. mine is a HUGE fixer upper, but i get comments on it all the time. pretty cool boat. got mine a year ago for $400 |

Andrew is so right! Don't waste a cent on that freeze cracked block. Mopar 318 long blocks are cheaper to buy than a Chevy, so spring for a good long block. About 1,800 bucks. Jeff |

thanks for the advice.. i got the 69 resorter as kind of a project boat, my father restores classic woodboats and his hobby has kind of trickled down to me. i have a pretty good mechanic that informed me of of the problem, but he's kind of hard to get in touch with.. so again its nice to have a good resource for information. apparently there is some water in the bell housing because my starter was froze up from the flywheel churning up water into it. im guessing a new engine would be the best route, but i am curious as to how complicated (and if its worth it) to convert a motor vehicle 318 to a marine one. also, if anybody has a good, reliable resource for used marine engines... ill probably need it. thanks again! also, andrew if you have some pics of your cheetah, id love to see them deflipo35@gmail.com

i'll send you some pics. for some reason, i cant get the prop shaft aligned. any thoughts? from what i understand, you can convert a motor engine pretty simply. You will need the intake manifold, and headers from your marine engine. other than that, i think it is pretty "do-able". also for used engines try http://usedboatsofdetroit.com/motors_parts.htm |

Nick: Just make sure you use a marine carb, marine alternator, marine fuel pump, marine distributor and cap and marine starter. All of these have been sealed, screened or altered to prevent the ignition of gasoline fumes that may collect in the engine compartment. If your car fuel pump diaghragm breaks, it leaks gas onto the road. If your boat fuel pump diaghragm fails, it would leak gas into the bilge. The marine fuel pump for Chrysler inboards has a small vent line that routes this leaking gas to the base of the carb where it is added to the fuel/air mix. In the last 30 years of boating I have had 4 Chrysler fuel pumps fail. On my last boat, the former owner had apparently installed an automotive fuel pump. When it eventually failed it sprayed gas all over my engine and alternator. A close call. |
