Last year my 28' Luhrs with a single 360 lost top end power. I usually would go up to 3500 rpm or so and get on plane then back off to 3200 to cruise at about 17 knots, it would go more, but I never push it. I took it out one day and could not get on plane or get over 2600 rpm or over 12 knots. I took all my stuff out of the boat(weight), cleaned the bottom, Changed the filters, checked the compression, checked the fuel pressures, changed the alternator (was only putting out 12v). All this maybe got me 100 more rpm, but it only got me to 13 knots. The boat starts quickly and idles perfect. It will occasionally stall as I am backing into my slip, but never will stall forward. I have 4 tanks where I can isolate the tanks or run out of 2,3 or all 4 at the same time. I ran 1 tank out and put fresh fuel in it then ran that tank alone but still had the same problem. I can notice a slight difference if all tanks are opened rather than just 1 or 2. The plugs and wires look good. I am getting ready to put the boat back in the water in a week or two.
I am considering a new coil, cap and rotor and cleaning the carb but I have a feeling that this may be different problem as the poor performance happened suddenly, not gradually. I would appreciate any suggestions.

1. Are the secondaries in the carb opening? I've seen the linkage rust and keep them closed.

2. Is the spark advancing? The advance mechanism can get rusty and prevent it. You can check this with a timing light.

Good luck,

Jeff

like jeff said, i have had problems with my secondaries. if the engine has good compression, and the oil looks fine, it has to be a spark, or fuel delivery problem. you might want to take a look at the spark plugs. most of the time they can tell you just how the engine is running. (ie: rich, lean)

Erich, I also have a 28 Luhrs. Every other season I go thru the same thing. I Change the cap and rotor along with the ballast resistor to correct it. Also if your carb has not been cleaned in a few years it would be good money spent. I had alot of problems after running E-10 gas the first season.

..."I had alot of problems after running E-10 gas the first season." You were not alone.

When will the People wake up to this rip off! Just heard on the news that world food prices are up 40 %. Sure, much of this is increased transportation costs due to high fuel prices, but the insanity of turning food into fuel is also responsible!

Jeff
