Replaced Carter with Edelbrock 1409 a few years back. Ran great but now it starts fine but, once it warms up, dies at low rpm. I have tried adjusting the two mixture screws on the front. That seems to help some when they are set at about 3 1/2 turns out but still not right. When it dies, I can give it full throttle and it will start right up again. New fuel lines, fuel pump, filter. Rebuilt carb as well. Filter is between the tank and pump. Any suggestions? |

Likely a vacuum leak. Possibly a bad carb gasket. Edelbrocks are great carbs so unless you have a lot of time on the engine since it was installed (if it was a new carb), likely the carb itself is good. Engine runs fine when you first start it because the choke is on and delivering a rich mixture and overcoming the vacuum leak. My guess is a new gasket will fix the problem. If it does, dont forget to re-adjust the mixture jets back to where they should be. Let us know if this does the trick. |

3 1/2 turns out! You gotta have the Mother of all Vacuum Leaks! About 1 1/2 turns out is normal. Jim is spot on here. Jeff |

Thanks Jeff and Jim. I will check it this weekend and make sure everything is tight on the carb. If it is still a problem I'll pull it and replace the gaskets. The carb was new and had very little run time, lots of garage time. I'll let you know how it works. |

Good. Interested to find out since I put one on mine and have yet to run it. Jeff |

Easy check for a vacuum leak is to spray WD-40 around the carb base with the engine idling as slow as possible. If there is a leak, the spray will cause the rpm's to increase a bit. Other area to check is the perimeter of the intake manifold around where it meets the block. |
