We recently purchased a pair of 1970s rebuilt LM 318s from a gentleman who took them in trade about 10 years ago.

The engines were re-assembled to the heads - but no valve train.

The cam shafts are in place and appear to be new.

When I picked these engines up he handed me a box of valve train parts that turn out to be for solid, adjustable lifters, not hydraulic lifters.

The rockers look like standard 340 rockers.

It is possible that these parts came from another of the many disassembled engines he has.

However, I don't want to take a chance with these rebuilds and simply install hydraulic lifters and rocker assemblies.

Two questions

1) Did Marine LM 318's ever come with solid lifters and adjustable rockers?

2) How can I be sure the camshafts in these engines are for hydraulic lifters - is there any way to tell without disassembly? The intake manifolds are off the engines.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

NO!

Unless the rockers adjustable for valve lash(which stock rockers are not), then I'm afraid not. Best guess is that the engine is high performance and not suited for boating. Better plan on buying a marine cam and lifters for it.

Thanks for the insight.

The engines were originally from a boat(came complete with trannies) and were rebuilt for marine use.

If there was no such thing as mechanical lifters than it stands to reason that the cam shafts that were installed in the rebuild are for hydraulic lifters.

Not the biggest risk I've ever taken ...

Thanks again

Mark
