Oil Coolers for Crusader 305

My question is; My SB GM Crusader used a single oil cooler for the transmission oil only. I have seen the "U" coolers out there as well. I'm guessing these cool the engine oil as well? Are the "U" coolers used on the BB engines and not the SB? Would it be wise to change the cooler to the "U" type and cool the engine oil on the SB as well? OR, am I missing something here? I would not convert, U coolers are a bit painful to maintain. Most non-crusader big blocks use two single coolers.
