New guy here. I have a crusader 270 R.H. I just replaced with a long block. Changed from points to a prestolite elect iginition. I have to time it from the flywheel. I cannot seem to get it to idle right. Quadrajet 4 bbl was rebuilt and sent back to be checked after the engine wouldn't start initially now it sounds good but the tach jumps around at idle. any suggestions.

Can you describe "jumping around" a little better. Is the engine idling smooth and its jumping, or is the engine surging so to speak that the tach is following the engine's up and downs? Are you sure all plug wires are on?No cylinders are down?Constant fuel flow?...Todd

The engine surges and the tach follows. I will check plug wires. I did have trouble getting the engine started when it was first put in. The carb was rebuilt. It is a mechanical fuel pump. How do I test for constant fuel flow?

.."How do I test for constant fuel flow?"

You have to Tee in a pressure gage, but I doubt that's the problem.

Try this: Let it warm thoroughly, then pull one wire out of the cap at a time. (Use heavy gloves and insulated handle pliers.) The motor must slow as the wire comes out, then speed back up as it is replaced.

Bet you'll find a couple wires are crossed. Hope so!

Jeff

Thanks I'll try that this weekend and follow up Sunday.
