I upgrade to pertronix from points. Boat will not start so I replace the coil with pertronix flamethrower #40111 58 milliamps, 1.5 ohms, 7200 rpm. The boat runs perfect got to set up timing and such. Test drove the boat for 15 minutes running in different speed. on the way back to the dock it stop and I can't get it to start up again.

Do you have B+ on the + coil terminal with the key on?

define what you mean bye not start?

Does it crank and not start? Then pull a plug wire and hold it to the plug and crank it and see if you got spark. Check the kill switch.

Don't crank at all? Is it in neutral?

When you set the timing did you tighten the bolt, could the dist have moved enough to cause this? Can't believe it's not at least backfiring if you've got spark and fuel. I'm assuming you checked for spark at the plugs and not at the dist?

I did tighten the bolt. the first time I installed it I had a great spark at the plug wires. after the test run and stop running the spark was weak. I replace the rotor and cap still just turn over no start

run a jumper wire straight to the dist. from the postive post of the battery.

Crank it over see what happens.

could it be the solenoid? If it runs good with the jumper thats what i would look at next.

What the Chief says or else you've toasted the coil or the Pertronix unit by using that coil. Are you using any kind of ballast resistor or resistor wire? Did you keep all the points stuff incase you want to try going back?

Carlito:

that's the wrong coil per Pertronix's ap data...I'd expect it the toast scenario Bob mentioned. You may want to go over the material at Pertronix's www site just to make sure you didn't miss sommething in the install.

i know you spent the money already, but i would put the points system back in just the way it was and try it again and see if you can get it to run.

If it runs good i would keep the points, i could go with a system such as you bought for nothing, but i chose to leave my 86' motor alone.

See it ain't broke so why would i try to fix it ?

Now if you were building say a 350, 305, 7.4 i would go with a hei unit, all in one piece one wire in one wire out.

It really depends on how you wired that coil since it's only 1.5 ohm. I think you should have used either a 40501, 40511 or 40611 as these are for a 4cyl and are 3 ohm.

Pertronix install instructions

Which way is yours wired?

Thank you everyone for your help. I got my boat running. I replace the coil with 40511 and got me a mallory rotor instead of aftermarket. It runs great but I need to figure out my electric choke so I will start a new thread thank you all.
