I have a OMC 2.3 17 1/2 foot sunbird, that is finnaly running great, went to electronic ignition, good to go there. Her is my problem. out drive is slipping out of foward gear, clunking. Already replaced the previous one with this used one. I have the money to have it rebuilt $2000 with all new parts and reconditioned casing and a two year warranty. (listing on ebay) Alot of money on a 1990 boat.
If i get it fixed i can prob sell and make a little money (not much) but more than if i sell it as is.
I have new shift cable also, which i should have replaced the first time.
Anyway, what do yall think? fix it or dump it?
Thanks

I'm partly biased towards Cobra's but I would say if you like the boat (engine is good) then I would fix and hope for at least 2 good years out of it!

I have a 3.0 l outdrive also that I put on the 2.3, but because of wrong gearing it would only do 10 mph. I just found a 18 foot bayliner that has a 3.0 in it < 1987, for $400 bucks. gONNA go look at it tommorrow> hmmm, what to do

Are you sure it needs rebuilding and not just a new shift cable and proper adjustment?

it "clunks every couple minutes, at above 2500 RPM or so.I have not installed new shift cable yet, just tried to adjust linkage at motor. Only drove back to dock when it started clunking, but that was on other side of lake, took about 30 min at slower speed. Don't know what kind of damage I did, if any. If its just the shoift cable thaqt would be great, I will install that, then sell it!

the cobra is a very tempramental drive to adjust. to adjust it the drive has to come off. there are many posts on here that refer to the stuart hastings adjustment procedure. read the procedure three times and make sure you understand it before making the adjustment. the first one I did took me about three hours and I had the drive on and off about five times. If you are still planing on selling let me know. I have become fond of the omc cobras and I am always looking for a good deal on another boat
