As you know I have a 86 Glastron,OMC 3.0 That I was about to give up on. Even though it has no issues. Well this evening I bought a 87 chaparell 3.0 with a mercrusier out drive. I bought it for parts but it is in better shape than my Glastron,Interior is great and it runs perfect. My question now is with all things equal, Which boat do I steal parts from? OMC or Merc? What have I done? |

^^^ a cry for help.... Bob's calling your loved ones to arrange an intervention The basic engines from the water pump to the flywheel are the same, but otherwise the 2 boats won't really share any parts |

Bob's calling your loved ones to arrange an intervention I'm sorry, I tried but they wouldn't take my call Ernie....not sure what got into you bud??? The Chaparell sounds like a nice boat...how does someone go from never having boat to being a 2 boat owner??? So now you have his and her boats! It was nice of you buy your wife a boat too! |

Are parts for the alpha 1 readily available. Or about the same for a cobra omc. I just want to make sure I can keep the kids busy next summer. I can't afford a new boat, so a spare one was the next best thing. Besides if my wife gets stranded out on the lake I'll have a way to get her back. (she has the checkbook) with her! |

Because Mercruiser is still in business and OMC isn't, many Mercruiser parts are much easier to find and often much cheaper than OMC, especially if looking for a new outdrive someday. |

Thanks for the quick responce. I think I can fix about anything if I have a knowledge base to tap into and a place to get the parts. Now I'm even looking in peoples back yards as I drive by for a potencial parts boats if needed down the road. |

Feel free. It seems good to see some one else get it for a change. Hoping the weather holds for tomorrow so I can put this new boat in the lake for one trip around the lake so I can put it up for the winter and not wonder if it will run ok. Looks like it needs very little to clean it up. Crap! now I have to order a merc alpha manual. At least it looks like I can use the same alignment tool I just bought for my cobra drive, Right? |

Well I ended up taking it to the lake after work. One thing I noticed when the boat was delivered was that it was sitting on the trailor tipped to the right but never thought about it much. When I launched it ,It sat in the water the same way. About 8 inches deeper in the water on the right than left. Fired her up and she took off with the bow way up, then to plane and runs perfect. Brought her back to the trailor and loaded and It again loaded tilted to the right. Now you must be getting the idea that something is wrong. When I got home I finally figured out that there is a compartment that is under the floor sectioned seperate from the engine compartment that is full of water holding about 40-50 gal of stale water that has no way out. I can tell you it will not be there tomorrow. Boat has been out ,uncorered all summer. Tomorrow I will drill a 1 inch hole so the water can drain into the engine compartment to drain out through the bilge. Then plug it with a regular bilge plug. I'm sure this is why the guy dumped the boat for 500 dollars. As far as I am concerned this is an easy fix and a real buy as everything else seems great. Just thought I would share this with everyone as I thought it was a little different of a problem. Ernie |

Hi Ernie First sorry about that stuff with Bob. I don't know why I pick on him. I have never met him and he is not to far from me. But I can tell you If you need help Bob or Hy are the ones that will help they sure helped me when I got my first boat. How I'm not sure what you boat looks like but I think I would not plug the hole that you drill if water got in once it will get in again where if the hole is open the water won't build up. Geez Frank...that almost brought a tear to my eye, I'll be thinking of you when I stop at Timmie's today! Ernie...when you do drill the (don't use an electric drill, only battery) try and use something to seal the wood with, resin would be great but if nothing else at the very least a few coats of exterior varnish or something like that. |

Well your not going to believe this, but after drilling a few holes I have come up DRY! each hole has wet floatation material but no mother load. Makes no sence to me. Something keeps pushing me back to the other boat with the OMC outdrive. Not sure what I'm going to do with this thing but I've winterized both boats and they are covered for the winter. Rest in peace! |

Ernie....you drilled in the wrong place, supposed to come up from the bottom bud Don't know how much of that flotation material there is but I bet it can weigh quite a bit if it's soaked....anyway something to ponder over the winter...have a good one!!! |

I hope your kidding. I know how to glass but drill from the bottom? Like I said it sits a good 8 inches deeper in the water on the starboard side. That would take 3or4 hundred lbs of extra wt right? If it is water logged I would say there is no way to ever dry it out. So I quess it will be a parts boat after all. |

For what its worth: I had a problem with an older boat that had an inner hull. Water, although very little, always drained from the inner hull. In 1983 I refurbished the boat and cut the inside deck out. Removed allthe damp foam, resin sealed the entire inside hull bottom; resin sealed the bottom side of marine plywood new floor, installed and then filled cavities with new (non-absorbing) foam; and then sealed entry holes. Sounds liek alot of work but it wasn't other than being careful not to cut too deep when removing the old flooring. The best part is the old wood flooring was damp and added weight. Once this project was done the boat actually sat 1-2" higher in the water, the hull was now unitized and was now stronger than ever. |

I'm back! OK I winterized my Glastron and it's all put up for the winter. Now for a new plan. I've pulled up the floor, took all the waterlogged foam out of the starbord side and found the port side dry , Both stringers are good shape and solid. Thinking of replacing foam with cut to size foam sheets from home depot. I've read some don't replace it at all. Dog house and seat bases are in the cellar for some repair. Engine and drive have been winterized. As you can see New plan is to save the Chaparrel and now I have 2 holes in the lake. |
