OMC I/O Stringer problem finally fixed. So for a year i have been chasing a problem. Motor is a transplanted 3.0 merc 140 in a 1986 Citation cuddy 19'. Running just a bit off, got me almost thru the season, new plugs, ac's, points set and reset, timed to perfection, still running a little rough. Idles's fine in the water, warm in gear, about 650-700. Last years ran perfect. I went thru the fuel system, everything my 45+ years of wrenching i tried. I worked on everything from jet aircraft as a trained US air force crew chief, to diesels, and of course gas motors. Small engines no problem. 2 weeks ago after coming off plane, running about 30 minutes to my fishing spot, it really would not idle below 1200. Ok fished the day, got in and on the trailer in my driveway went thru everything again. Got it to run ALMOST perfect but i must say this there was a distinct smell of exhaust in the bilge just couldn't pinpoint where it was comming from, the smell was there 2 weeks ago on the water also. Launch the boat, at the dock, pull the doghouse off and start it up just wouldn't run. Starboard side water is shooting out the side of the motor, and won't run starts, water shooting out dies. Pull the boat out, on the trailer in my driveway, i stick my hand under the esa plate to feel for the rubber cap on the starboard, exhaust port, hoping that was the problem, and sure enough there is a 4 inch tear. Yank it off, go to home cheapo, 4 dollars latter i am home with a cap, and new clamp it came with install it and bingo the boat's fixed. Take the boat back to the dock and 45 minutes on the water i am at a different spot, fished and ran the boat all over Raritan bay. Idles fine runs perfect, i am convinced that there was a pinhole leak no water coming out just exhaust till this morning when it finally gave out that 30 year old rubber cap. Just thought this might help someone else with a old style stringer drive with a problem such as mine. Above is copied and pasted here, from another site i post to. I am the original author. |

Thanks for sharing Chief! I guess this could even happen on a Cobra that has rubber end caps at the rear of the exhaust manifolds. |
