My power steering jitters when going very slow and don't mean makes noise, but when turning the steering wheel it's hard and jerky up to around 800 rpms but even after it's still hard to turn. The power steering only works off one engine but steers both OMC out-drives. Is that the norm on duel drives? When turned the engine with the power steering off was very difficult to turn the steering wheel. Any suggestions? and how can you tell if the power steering is giving it all?
Thanks for any feed back.

Like Hy Stat says...check the fluid, also check the belt tension. Yes this is normal for twins, makes it a bit of pain if you carry spare belts like I do as you need a different one for each engine.

When turned the engine with the power steering off was very difficult to turn the steering wheel.

Do you mean when that engine is turned off?

Thanks Bob for bringing to my attention the two different belt sizes, I never gave it much tought but I will check into it. Back to the power steering fluid and belt tension seem to be normal, no slipping. Any more helpfull ideas?
And yes thats what I ment when that engine was turned off.

ok...my PS pump is on the stbd engine so yes if I lose that engine my power steering turns into armstrong steering .

Could be that your pump is starting to go but do you grease the steering actuator assembly behind the engine? There is a grease fitting on there plus I always wipe a coating of triple guard grease on the steering tube its self.

Hi Bob. I never driven some one else's boat with twin drives so I have no idea how they in comparison with mine. Single drive feels just like autos. Used to be really bad when I first got it 9 years ago it had a kinked hose right behind the engine and since I corrected that it was a large improvement. Yes I do grease the actuator ass. Iam wondering if there is some test that could be done on the ps pump itself.
