I just acquired an 1984 Sea Ray 180 that's been sitting in a storage lot since 1995 and wanted some advice on what to check and what to maintenance or have maintenanced for me before I try to put it on the water. I was told the boat was in good running condition when it was parked last and the owners just got burnt out on boating so they stopped using the boat. It has a 140hp OMC engine Model:302STHRCRA The outdrive is Model: 983486 I imagine I should replace anything rubber like hoses, fuel lines, the seal around the outdrive. New batteries and oil. I don't know if there is any fuel in the tank, but I heard that gasoline turns into something else after a very long time. If this is true, what can I do about it. Please post any experience with the same boat or motor and can alert me to any quirks that come with it. Thanks, -ig |

first thing i would do is get a good manual for the outdrive and motor.i have seloc omc stern drives 1964-1986 repair manual i bought it at west marine.second thing i would do is check the dipstick.how does it look if it is milky than you have a problem might not be major if a little dirty ok too but that means they didint change the oil before they parked it.if oil is ok go to third thing.if milky stop and post here we will go from there. third thing.pump anything in the gas tank out.the way i did it was to unscrew the sending unit and shine a light down the hole and see if there is anything in there.if it was parked with a empty tank than thats a good thing.if you smell varnish than you will ether have to clean the tank yourself or take it to a pro.gas tank cleaner.i dont know where you live but if you live in or near a city than odds are there is a fuel tank cleaner near you.there are many products out there than you can put in the tank to clean it out but sucking it out the hole where the sending unit is in my opinion the only way to do it.do not try to start the motor till the tank is clean.a clean tank is the very very first thing we must start with.you could start the motor with a portable gas tank.but that is latter.you could wait to clean the tank after you check to outdrive oils. inspect the fuel fill hose, fan belt.check the battery cables assume nothing check everything.now maybe youll be lucky.install a fully charged battery.next the outdrive.check the three oil fill plugs.if you have the manual you will see where they are.however they are located on the starboard side of the outdrive.there are three seperate fill and drain holes.check all three.is the oil milky.if milky drain.fill with gear oil.i use wal-mart 80-90 weight oil.does not have to be marine.gear oil is gear oil.next port side you will see a half moon shaped gear that is the tilt gear.there is a gear housing on the outside of the outdrive.there is a drain hole and a fill hole.unsrew the fill hole if clean oil is present ill eat my hat.bottom is drain hole drain it.fill with 30 weight oil for now.ok cross ya fingers.hook up rabbit ears to outdrive with running water never try to start a boat without water running to the outdrive.get in boat with a protable gas tank hooked up or gas in the tank try to start it.post what happens next.i or someone else mr fox or mr stat will try to help you. |
