just bought 1987 seaswirl with a 2.3 ford engine. The engine would'nt stop cranking when the batery was connected. I disconnected the starter cable and reattached battery when I touched the starter cable to starter it started and kept running when I pulled the cable off (had to pull the coil wire off to stop the engine).Figuring that the problem was a stuck starter solenoid, I tapped on it and broke it loose. I rehooked the the starter and the battery. Now when I turn the ing. switch to start it starts and then stops when I return the switch to on.When I read the + terminal of the ign. coil I get less than one volt to ground with the switch on.Also the wire on that terminal gets hot when the ing. sw is left on for a long time. is there a diode in that circuit, if so where is it? I have a Clymer shop manual but the wireing diagrams in it are not much help. Can someone help me find a good wireing diagram for this unit?

Your points were probably closed when you did that so the coil is energized. There is no diode in that circuit but there is a resistance wire which is what the coil uses when the key is turned to on. There will also be another wire on the + side of the coil that comes from the starter solenoid (non-resistance) this will feed the coil with a full 12v during starting.

Sent you a diagram through email that should help, they don't post too good as you have to reduce them too much.

Thanks Bob appreciate the diagram. This will help me do a better job of troubleshooting my problem! I know I'm being a pain but do you think you can send me the other half of that diagram(the one that shows the other side of that 8 wire plug and the ign. switch.
thanks, joesap

Joe....you should have 2 wires on the positive post of the coil. The red/purple wire is the resistor wire, it actually comes from a splice off the alternator. The other wire is the purple/black which conmes from the start solenoid (it has 12v but only when key is turned to start)

I've never actually had the splice apart but it should be the purple/red is spliced to the purple. The other wire from that splice (purple) then feeds 12v to the ESA module.

Hi bob, got the thing going not sure what the problem was it just started working after I played with the micro switches in the over crank.
I am considering mooring the boat in salt water. I am thinking about a sealed cooling system. What do you think?

Glad you got it going, don't know too much about closed loop cooling as my boats have always been raw water cooled (fresh water lakes). Maybe someone else will chime in about them.
