I am in need of a wiring diagram for a 1989 4.3L omc cobra with prestolite ignition system. If anyone could send me a diagram or a link to one that would be great. |

Sent you one via email, had to reduce this one so much the quality is not very good unless you detach and blow it up.

Okay, I rewired the hole ignition system exactly to the diagram (we had a hungry mouse). The motor fires but won't stay running, the coil is getting 12 volts when cranking but soon as it fires the coil goes dead it is not getting the 9 volts it needs to keep running. I am confused, I have read about a resistance wire on some motors and am wondering if that could be my problem? I don't really understand how it all works but I am learning. I used standard 14 gauge wire to do my rewireing. I also have an extra wire coming off the positive side of the coil it appears to be pink with a red stripe it is not shown in the diagram. That is the only wire that is different in the diagram. |

Ayuh,..... You're Not getting power from the Key Switch,.... The Coil gets it's power 2 ways,.... When Cranking, it draws power from the inner small stud on the Starter..... Then after it lights,... It get's it's power from the Igntion Circuit from the Key Switch,.... That's the 1 you're Missing..... |

Actually on the Cobra your supposed to get the 9 volts from the resistor wire. If you look on the diagram you will see a purple/red wire coming from the + side of the coil, this is the resistor wire, it goes back to a splice with a purple wire (this feeds 12v to the ESA module) the other side of the splice is feed by a purple wire coming from the alternator. |
