Anybody know of a good place to buy a shortblock? As a newbie boat person, I did not drain the engine in winter and cracked the heads. I had those replaced/rebuilt and was going to tear down the engine and bring the block in for magna flux, but I don't want to screw with it now and looking for quicker solution. I live in California, but I guess other places ship. Boat is an '84 Seaswirl My OMC model is: 382STMRCOM Block is stamped GM 3.8L 471594 Intake is GM 6269732, firing order 165432 |

if $700+$500 is a deal breaker, then you might consider selling the boat, OR.... look for the same powered boat with a failed outdrive and use the engine. Piece it together and sell it. As far as short block, I predict you won't find anything rebuilt locally in SW for under $2000.00... 229 is not a common unit anymore...1984 was the last production so a rebuilder would have to do a 1 shot deal and try to find a core in your land of salt water.... If you buy a core with the intent of rebuilding yourself, that will cost $1500 to $2200 in parts and machining services. If it's been in salt water ever, don't touch it... if Rancho Cordova is local to you There's a guy selling a used 3.8 long block on eBay for $1000, but again...I'd be pulling the heads and looking in water passages for salt destruction before touching it...and pull the intake and look for cracks near the lifters like yours probably has. pressure testing the block would be wise....but the only water near there is the ocean... and 3.8's never came with closed cooling so it's probably $1000 of junk |

Sorry, read your post too fast, thought it was 500 for motor and 1200 to ship! I agree that anything used is a leap of faith. California is not all ocean though, we do have lakes and reservoirs and a big river called the Sacramento. In reality, my boat would just be used sporadically in 3 lakes in my area. |

I'm looking for a Heat Exchanger for a OMC GM 3.8L. Closed System older style if it makes a difference. |

Can any one tell me what kind of auto parts will fit on my 3.8 OMC ? If not does any one know if I can put a 4.3 in its place? The one i have was winterized then sat for a few years and is locked up right now. |

are you sure the engine is locked and not the outdrive?, or the intermediate housing. marvel mystery oil and other products can unstick an engine. |
