I have a vp 275 leg with, of coarse, reverse pawl problems. I had problems with it last year so I bought a vp orginal reverse kit. I replaced the lacthes and the springs. But still have a problem. It catches sometimes and sometimes it does not. Most of the time when I first put in the water it works fine but after a few times of using reverse the drive will then "float" and will not work the rest of the time on the lake. I tried "adjusting" the shift cable and lift rod several times but no luck.

It seems the latches#53 are catching on #48 the collar. I tried to shorten my spring#50 but it still does not pull the pawl up the whole way. One thought I had, do the bolts#49 that go through the lacthes get tighten down or are they just "loosely" put in so they don't cause friction. I don't want anything fallin' apart in the water but I am without reverse so much that it is almost not nessary. Any thoughts??

Try the search function in the forum with the words reverse pawl. This topic has been discussed several times.

Yes, actually I spent approx. 2 hrs the other day searching forums back to 2005 hopefully tring to find the gold at the end of the rainbow. I found some helpful hints that I tried yesterday working on the boat but I'm still lacking 100% workabillity. I just can't seem to swallow my pride enough and take it to the dealer. I'm a do it my self type person with replacing the engine, rebuilding the drive, fixing the water system, etc...And I can't fix a simple reverse pawl!!!

So you are a do-it yourselfer when it comes to work on your engine and outdrive?? Well, I like that .

First, download this manual:

http://www.mybayliner.co.uk/boatmad/280285290.pdf

then go to page 127 (129) and see if the instructions given there solve your problem. If not, you can try Seloc or Clymer, but they do not have much more to add (though their illustrations are better).

The two most common problems that I have encouonter with retaining pawls (other than wear and tear) are lack of adjustment and lack of lubrication.

Good luck. BTW, chances are the dealer won't do the job any better than you would.

Thank you for such speedy responses El Pescador. That is actually one of the links I down loaded along with another manual I found in the forums and a .jpg of the tilt lock that is the same as in my Clymer. Like I said, I have went through all the problems of engine replacement ,carb, drive, and even dumb little rail base fittngs on deck and I fell like "less of a man" because I can't figure out a few springs and pcs of metal that cost WAY TOO much.

You can get the springs aftermarket for a fraction of what you pay to VP:

Well I got a stiffer spring from the hardware store it seems to work. But my last question is since my reverse has never worked from the begining properly, I am not sure how it is supposed to feel. When I engage shift into reverse now the shifter is alittle stiff and reverse "clunks" alittle. Is this normal or is more adjustment nessary??
