When is this fill plug used for access?
I can't find any reference to using this access point for filling with lube. It is item #5 in the illustration. The manuals point to the fill plug in the top cap(upper gear case cover) or using a funnel to pre fill if you have the gear assy off for filling purposes??? |

Answer: When a person wishes to fill the drive with oil and get it done in less than a week! 
Seriously, it's there for a reason!
Also note that since the dip stick reads from within the hollow vertical shaft, it can take up to 5-6 minutes to give us an accurate reading.
