Hello. I would like some advice on just what is the best way to put in a thru hull water intake. I know I will use a strainer as well, but what brand is the least likely to give me problems? I have to pull my 18' Bayliner capri tomorrow and I will winterize my AQ 125 A, but the local weed problem has almost cost me a motor and I want to relieve that issue. I see many brands on ebay, but this is not the time to get cheap, nor foolish. Thanks guys. |

The red valve handle is a hose bib which allows me to winterize/flush the engine by putting a short hose into a 5 galpail with w water hose running in it.

The white block is STARBOARD that has been bedded to the hull. Its not obvious in the picture, but the "scoop" is "toed in" and not pointing straight forward. Water flow at that point on the hull is back and outwards from the keel, not straight back. |

Are you convinced that thru hull pick up will solve this problem?
While the square area of the thru hull grate may be close to the same.... maybe even slightly larger......., the suction/intake volume do remain much the same.
Robert, would there be any advantage to installing two "in parallel" thru hull pick-ups, thus reducing suction at each?

I subscribe to the fewer the thru hull holes the better philosophy. One should make sure that the hose is rated for suction side service, i.e. wire reinforced and is the same size (I/D) as the inlet port on the raw water pump. In my case, the line is 1 1/4" and everything from the pump to the thru hull is 1-1/4". What is not obvious in the photos is that the thru hull fitting is of this type

And that the "scoop/strainer" is a bolt on, not part of the thru hull. If I had to do it over again, I'd get one where the strainer section could be removed for cleaning as every once in a great while, some wiley crustatian decides to take up residence inside the thruhull itself.
Note: I'm not recommending Defender as I've never used them...but I've never heard a bad thing about them either... |
