El Pescador, Please Help! I've posted this twice and no one will help me. You seem like one of the more knowledgable people on the forum. I have a 2000 Glastron with the 4.3 Volvo Penta GL. I have it out a few times this year and it ran great. Two weeks ago, I took it out and run it a couple of hours and sat and swam for an hour. When I started it up and took off, it began overheating immediately. I wasn't real concerned, because this happend in the past and it was the impeller. I brought it home and pulled the impeller housing and the impeller was in great shape. I pulled the thermastat and found one of the outlets was restricted by part of the impeller that I changed in the past. I thought that would fix the problem. I changed the thermastat and removed the blockage and took it and backed it in the water and after a few minutes it began overheating again. It's almost as though water is not getting in the block at all. The day it overheated, we were running across the lake to the swimming place and I thought I heard the engine making a different hum. I thought it was my imagination at first, but now I'm not sure if that was when something happened. Anyway, that's my story. I don't want to spend alot of money finding the problem, so if anyone has suggestions, please help |

Is the water circulation pump (as opposed to the seawater pump) ok? |

That was my next step, but with the auto experience I've had, I've never seen a water pump just go out. I've had the diaphram leak and change it, but never seen one that just stop pumping. |

Alan, First, thank you for your compliments. Because of the description you made, I assume that your engine is raw water cooled (no closed cooling). So I will also make the assumption that your boat did not trap a piece of plastic or whatever on the outdrive water intake grids and that you have ensured the raw water pump is working correctly. What I would check first is that the thermostat opens and closes with temperature changes, which you can do by immersing it in boiling water. If it fails the test, or if in doubt, replace the thermostat. Then, I would check the thermostat housing for blockage in any of the passages, and also the hoses between the housing and the exhaust manifolds. Further, I would flush the exhaust manifolds and make sure water flows freely through them. If all the above is OK, then you may want to ensure that the water circulating is in good condition and that there is no debris from the raw water pump impeller trapped in the circulating pump impeller or passages. If manifolds and risers are old, you may want to consider removing them from the boat and inspecting the water passages. If they look blocked, you may want to send manifolds and risers to a radiator shop for "boiling", or renewing them if they are too wasted away. As Ricardo and others have pointed out many times, you always have to follow a process of elimination, starting with the most likely (and least expensive) causes. Good luck. |
