Just bought a boat with a Volvo Penta AQ131A. Previous owner purchased battery and installed new battery cables. Worked for about 30 minutes while out of the water without an issue. Once in the water the cables started to overheat and smoke. It got so hot the battery post on the battery melted. When the engine turns it seems like is turning on a dead battery. Any ideas? Thanks. |

1) RE: "turning on a dead battery" If it got that hot, the battery is likely dead. 2)What kind of boat? 3)Disconnect the wires to the power tilt. Possible bad seal in the tilt rod shaft letting sea water into the motor and windings shorting to case... I would have expected a fuse to have blown sonnewhere along the line... check to see if P/O "re-engineered" the fuse sizes. |

Thanks for your quick response. The turning on a dead battery is prior to the battery overheating. The boat is a 1987 sunrunner. Will try your suggestion later today. Is there any visual evidence i can look for to eliminate the water leakage? Thanks. |

If that's the case... 1) Check that the battery polarity is correct, i.e., the + cables connected to the + term, etc. 2) Battery may have an internal short not at all related to the boat. 3) Starter may have a short. |

Well seems like a succesful day. Replaced battery and cables and the engine fires right up like a regular car. Checked the starter and no short there. Had the engine running for 20min with no issues. Will place it in the water tomorrow for the final optest. Will post results and hopefully close this thread. Wish me luck. |
