I have a 2005 Volvo Penta 5.7l Gi-E, DP-S duo prop on a 232 Rinker Captiva. Lately I have been experiencing the audio alarm going off when the boat is near wide open throttle, or up around 4500 or so rpms. The alarm will go off- a steady solid beep, which changes to a intermittent beep a few times and then stops as soon as I bring the boat down off of plane. I put the boat back on plane and open her up, then it will go off again. The boat appears to be operating very efficiently. It has good oil pressure (on both gauge, and when I check the dipstick); and there appears to be no overheating/water temperature issues.
I am suspecting that there is a problem with the engine overspeed alarm because last time the alarm went off I was watching the tachometer and have noticed that the needle will sometimes swing wildly in either direction. Also, the needle on the tach will swing when the boat is sitting at idle speed and not in gear, so I'm ruling out any gear/propeller issue. Basically the only time the alarm goes off is when i'm at upwards of 4000-4500 rpms. Again, the boat appears to be running very well...no vibrations, missing, ...etc. This is an annoyance because it is preventing me from travelling very far up and down the river due to having to stop the boat every few minutes to deal with the alarm. There appears to be no problem when I keep the rpms down under 4000.
Where do I start in trying to correct this problem? What do I check? Could a bad tach gauge be the problem? Bad sender or sensor? Any suggestions would be appreciated before I turn it over to marine mechanics and dole out $$$$$!!!!! |
