V/P 4.3gl while my engine is out ive decided to give it a service, the book says oil should be sg 20/50 or 15/50 is this right or to thick an oil. also are there any upgrades in oil and petrol filters for this engine , to me the V/P looks cheap and it does not stop water going though the filter media, would there be any harm in sourceing a auto filter considering its a marinzed car engine. i think i recently read that some mercury filter fit on a V/P ive recently seen a K&N filter that i could use for the flame arraster on the carb that i could unrivet the two top and buttom plate of the flame arraster and sandwitch the K/N filter in between and re rivet in place ??????would there any advantages in may be installing a K&N any thoughts would be aprreciated. mark w |

In any multigrade oil, the first numbers represent what the oil's viscosity mimics at low temperatures, while the other number represents the oil's behaviof at high temps. If you don't expect to operate below freezing 20/50 is ok, otherwise 10/50. The issue of fuel filters stopping water was not as big an issue pre-ethanol polluted gas days. These days, in most climates, its an issue. Auto filters by and large are not intended to seperate water from fuel. RE: K+N... YOu MIGHT get a slight HP boost, HOWEVER make sure that the K+N you pick is a MARINE one, not an automotive one. Modifying the existing flame arrestor in the manner you described is a VERY bad idea. If a stock K+N marine filter/flame arrestor will fit... go fo it. If you have to modify it, you will void its certification... and your insurance policy. |
